The Rainbow Bee Eater, Merops ornatus, is a local bird that can be seen and heard in its noisy and colourful flocks around Cairns. A group of them especially love roosting in the street trees on Botany Avenue in Redlynch. They measure about 27cm from beak to tail.
They like sandy banks to excavate nest burrows. They are very much a local icon bird with their amazing colours.
